What Is a Cent?

Definition

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use cent in property documents and sale deeds.

Typical Plot Sizes

Small residential plots: 3–10 cents. 1 cent ≈ 40 sq m - enough for a small house foundation.

Cent to Sq Ft Questions

1 cent = 435.6 sq ft exactly. This follows from: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 100 cents, so 1 cent = 43,560 ÷ 100 = 435.6 sq ft.

1 acre = 100 cents. This is the defining relationship. Agricultural land records in Kerala and Tamil Nadu often list area in cents, while larger parcels use acres.

1 cent = 435.6 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 40.4686 sq m. So 1 acre = 100 cents = 4,046.86 sq m.

1 cent = 435.6 sq ft. 1 ground = 2,400 sq ft. So 1 ground = 2,400 ÷ 435.6 = 5.51 cents. Conversely, 1 cent = 1 ÷ 5.51 = 0.1815 grounds.

In Andhra Pradesh, the equivalent unit is called "guntha" (also = 1/40 acre = 1,089 sq ft). In Karnataka, "ankanam" or "guntha" is used in some areas. Only Kerala and Tamil Nadu use "cent" specifically.
