Your sun sign is determined by the position of the Sun at the moment of your birth. In Western (Tropical) astrology, the 12 zodiac signs are fixed to the seasons and begin at the Spring equinox (0 degrees Aries). In Vedic (Sidereal) astrology - used in Indian Jyotish - the signs are fixed to the actual constellations in the sky. The difference between the two systems, called the ayanamsa, is approximately 23-24 degrees currently, meaning your Vedic Surya Rashi (sun sign) is often one sign earlier than your Western sun sign. This calculator uses the Lahiri Ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang (National Almanac) since 1955.
In Vedic Jyotish, the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is considered more important than the Sun sign for personality and emotional nature, as the moon changes sign every 2.5 days and is seen as more reflective of the individual. However, the Sun sign (Surya Rashi) indicates the soul's purpose, ego, authority, and career potential. It also governs timing of Sun-related dashas and transits. Publications such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - the foundational text of Indian astrology, written by sage Parashara - describe the qualities and lordships of each of the 12 rashis in detail, forming the basis of classical Jyotish analysis still practised by millions of astrologers across India today.
