Purnima Calendar - Full Moon Dates India

Purnima, the full moon day, is one of the most sacred tithis in the Hindu lunar calendar. It falls on the 15th day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in every month. India observes at least 12 Purnimas a year, each carrying distinct religious significance. Guru Purnima (Ashadha month, July) honours teachers and gurus; Sharad Purnima (Ashwina, October) is believed to be the night when the moon is closest to Earth and moonlight carries medicinal properties; Kartik Purnima (November) coincides with Dev Deepawali in Varanasi.

Regional Importance Across India

In Tamil Nadu, Purnima is called Pournami and is a popular day for temple visits. In West Bengal, Kojagori Lakshmi Puja falls on Sharad Purnima. In Maharashtra, the Tripurari Purnima in Kartik month draws millions of devotees. Buddhists celebrate Buddha Purnima (Vaishakha month, May) as the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha - a national public holiday in India since 1956.

Lunar Calendar Accuracy

The exact Purnima tithi shifts each year because the lunar month is approximately 29.5 solar days. This tool calculates Purnima start and end times using precise astronomical data so you can plan fasting (Satyanarayan Katha vrat), rituals, or travel around correct tithi timings rather than relying on approximate dates.

Purnima Questions

Purnima is the full moon day in the Hindu lunar calendar, occurring once a month. It is considered highly auspicious for fasting, puja, and spiritual activities. Each monthly Purnima has a special name based on the Hindu month it falls in.

Several are especially sacred: Guru Purnima (Ashadha) for honouring teachers, Sharad Purnima (Ashwina) for Lakshmi worship, Kartik Purnima for lamps and river bathing, and Buddha Purnima (Vaishakha) for Buddhists.

Sharad Purnima falls in Ashwina (October). The moon is believed to be at its closest and brightest on this night. Goddess Lakshmi is said to descend to earth. Devotees keep kheer under moonlight overnight and consume it as prasad the next morning.

Purnima is the full moon day (maximum moonlight), while Amavasya is the new moon day (no moonlight). Both are sacred - Purnima is for celebrations and Lakshmi/Vishnu worship; Amavasya is for ancestral rites (Pitru Tarpan).

Guru Purnima falls on Ashadha Purnima (June–July) and is dedicated to honouring one's teacher. It is celebrated by both Hindu and Buddhist communities and marks the birth anniversary of sage Vyasa - revered as the guru of all gurus.
