GPA / SGPA FAQ

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). For example, if you score O (10) in a 4-credit subject and A (8) in a 3-credit subject: SGPA = (10×4 + 8×3) ÷ (4+3) = (40+24) ÷ 7 = 64 ÷ 7 = 9.14. CGPA is the weighted average of all semester SGPAs.

UGC/CBSE formula: Percentage = SGPA × 10 − 7.5. So SGPA 8.0 = 72.5%, SGPA 9.0 = 82.5%. Some universities use SGPA × 10 (without subtracting 7.5) - check your university's specific conversion formula. Anna University uses CGPA × 10 = percentage.

Most top companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant) require minimum 6.0–7.0 CGPA on 10-point scale. Product companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) typically require 7.5–8.0+ for on-campus drives. For MS/MBA applications abroad, 7.5+ (≈ 67.5% by UGC formula) is a common threshold. IITs and NIITs for M.Tech usually require 6.0–7.5 CGPA depending on the institute.
