How the Pomodoro Method Works

Work 25 min

Focus on a single task for 25 minutes with no distractions. One pomodoro.

02
Short Break 5 min

Step away from the screen, stretch, or grab water. Let your brain reset.

03
Repeat × 4

Complete 4 pomodoros in a row. Track your progress with the session dots.

04
Long Break 15 min

After 4 sessions, take a 15-minute break. Then start the cycle again.

Pomodoro Timer Focus Technique for Productivity

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s while he was a university student in Italy. He used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer ("pomodoro" means tomato in Italian) to break his study sessions into 25-minute focused intervals, each followed by a 5-minute break. After four intervals (called "pomodoros"), a longer 15-20 minute break is taken. The method is now widely used by students, developers, writers, and professionals worldwide to improve focus, reduce mental fatigue, and increase daily output.

Why It Works - The Neuroscience

The Pomodoro Technique works by leveraging the brain's natural attention cycles. Research from the University of Illinois (2011) found that brief mental breaks significantly improve sustained concentration over long study or work sessions. By forcing regular breaks, the technique prevents the cognitive fatigue that accumulates during marathon study sessions - a common issue for UPSC, JEE, and NEET aspirants who study for 8-12 hours daily. Several IIT coaching institutes in Kota and top CA exam preparation centres now recommend the Pomodoro method to their students.

Customisable Timer Settings

This free Pomodoro timer runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up required. Customise work session duration, short break, and long break intervals to match your personal focus capacity. Browser notifications alert you when each session ends, so you can step away from the screen without missing the transition.
