Hanuman Aarti Significance and Tradition

Hanuman aarti is one of the most beloved devotional rituals in Hinduism, performed to invoke the blessings of Lord Hanuman - the devoted disciple of Lord Ram and the embodiment of strength, courage, and selfless service. The aarti typically includes the iconic "Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki" composed in Braj Bhasha, a literary dialect of Hindi historically used in devotional poetry from the 16th century onward. Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet-saint who authored the Ramcharitmanas and Hanuman Chalisa, is the most revered figure in the Hanuman devotional tradition.

Hanuman Worship Across India

Lord Hanuman is worshipped across virtually every region of India, transcending linguistic and caste boundaries. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered his sacred days, and millions of devotees visit Hanuman temples on these days - making them among the busiest temple days nationwide. Major Hanuman temples include Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir in Varanasi, Salasar Balaji in Rajasthan, Mahavir Mandir in Patna, and Yadadri Temple in Telangana. Hanuman Jayanti, celebrated on the full moon of Chaitra month (typically March-April), draws enormous gatherings at temples across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

The Role of Aarti in Hindu Practice

Aarti, derived from the Sanskrit "aratrika," refers to the waving of a lit lamp before the deity while singing devotional hymns. It marks the culmination of puja rituals and is performed morning and evening in most Hindu households and temples. Chanting the Hanuman aarti with devotion is believed to bring protection, remove fear, and bestow blessings of health and prosperity on the worshipper and their family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hanuman Aarti (Aarti Kije Hanuman Lalla Ki) is a popular devotional hymn praising Lord Hanuman - the divine son of Anjana and the Wind God, the devoted servant of Shri Ram. It praises his immense strength (at which mountains tremble), his feats of burning Lanka and reviving Lakshmana with Sanjeevani herb, and his role as the protector of saints and devotees. It is sung after the Hanuman Chalisa and at the conclusion of all Hanuman puja.

Hanuman Aarti is sung on Tuesdays and Saturdays (Hanuman's special days), on Hanuman Jayanti, and at the conclusion of any Hanuman puja or Ramcharitmanas path. It is typically sung immediately after completing the Hanuman Chalisa recitation. During Ram Navami, Diwali and Navratri, Hanuman Aarti is also widely performed at temples and in homes.

According to tradition, Sita Ji applied sindoor (vermillion) in her hair parting for Shri Ram's long life and welfare. When Hanuman asked why, Sita replied it brings Ram longevity. In immense devotion, Hanuman covered his entire body with sindoor - believing this would bring Ram even more blessings. Since then, Hanuman is worshipped with sindoor offerings, and devotees apply sindoor to Hanuman idols as a mark of his blessing and protection.

The Sanjeevani herb episode is one of Hanuman's greatest feats. When Lakshmana was struck down by Indrajit's weapon in the battle of Lanka, the physician Sushena instructed that the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas was the only cure. Unable to identify the specific herb, Hanuman lifted the entire Dronagiri mountain and brought it to Lanka by dawn - reviving Lakshmana and saving the battle. This demonstrates Hanuman's supreme devotion, which turns the impossible into the possible.
