Country Flags - Visual Reference for 195 Nations

National flags are among the most recognisable symbols of sovereignty and identity. The current era of modern national flags began broadly after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, though India's Tricolour was officially adopted on 22 July 1947 - three weeks before Independence. The Flag Code of India 2002 governs display rules, and the 2022 amendment allows citizens to fly the flag at home 24 hours a day. Globally, the United Nations recognises 193 member states, plus 2 non-member observer states (Vatican City and Palestine), totalling 195 sovereign entities with distinct flags.

Flags in Indian Competitive Exams

UPSC Civil Services Prelims, SSC CGL, IBPS PO, and State PSC examinations regularly include questions about national flags, particularly during international relations topics. Questions may ask about the flag of ASEAN nations, SAARC member states (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka), BRICS members, or G20 countries. This visual reference tool lets you browse flags grouped by continent and search by country name or ISO code for quick revision.

Flag Emoji and Copy-Paste

Each flag entry includes the Unicode emoji flag, which is composed of two Regional Indicator Symbol Letters (RISL). For example, India's flag emoji uses RI letters I and N. These emoji render correctly on all modern operating systems and are widely used in WhatsApp messages, social media bios, and digital communication representing national pride or travel destinations.

Country Flags Questions

On Android and Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac), flag emoji display as actual colourful flag images. On Windows 10/11, they appear as two regional indicator letters (e.g. 'IN' for India) by default - Microsoft has not natively supported flag emoji in Windows fonts. To display flags on Windows, install a third-party emoji font like Twemoji Mozilla or Noto Color Emoji. Most social media platforms (WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter) and web browsers render flag emoji as actual flag images regardless of operating system.

Each flag emoji is made of two Unicode 'Regional Indicator Symbol' characters spelling the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code. India 🇮🇳 = Regional Indicator I (U+1F1EE) + Regional Indicator N (U+1F1F3). The rendering engine combines them into one flag image. They are real Unicode text characters - not images - and safe to copy and paste into HTML, meta tags, social media posts, page titles and URLs. Each flag emoji is 2 Unicode code points, though displayed as one symbol.

ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 is the international standard two-letter country code published by the ISO. Common codes: IN = India, US = United States, GB = United Kingdom, CN = China, AU = Australia, DE = Germany, JP = Japan, PK = Pakistan, BD = Bangladesh, LK = Sri Lanka. These codes are used globally for: internet country TLDs (.in, .us, .gb), flag emoji, vehicle registration plates, currency codes and country selection in software forms worldwide.

The Indian tricolour has three horizontal stripes: Saffron (top) - courage, sacrifice and renunciation; White (middle) - peace, truth and purity; India Green (bottom) - faith, fertility and auspiciousness. The navy blue Ashoka Chakra (24-spoke dharma wheel) at the centre represents dharma and the continuous wheel of time. Designed by Pingali Venkayya, adopted on 22 July 1947. The Flag Code of India, 2002 governs its proper use - the national flag must be made of khadi (hand-spun cloth).

Nepal has the world's only non-rectangular national flag - a double pennon (two stacked triangles). Bhutan's flag features a dragon (the Thunder Dragon). Cambodia's flag is the only national flag featuring a building (Angkor Wat). Portugal, San Marino and Ecuador have detailed coats of arms. By contrast, Japan (red circle on white), Ukraine (blue over yellow) and Poland (white over red) have among the simplest designs - making flags an interesting study in national symbolism.
