Tip Calculator - Split Bill and Calculate Tip

Tipping culture varies significantly across the world. In the United States, tipping 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is a social norm and critical to restaurant workers' income. In India, tipping is customary but not obligatory, and practices differ between city fine-dining establishments and roadside dhabas. Most urban Indian restaurants, particularly those serving international cuisine, appreciate a 10% tip, while delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy now offer in-app tip options for delivery partners, with the average Indian user tipping Rs 15-30 per order.

Service Charge vs Tip in India

A key distinction in India: many restaurants add a service charge (typically 10%) to the bill automatically. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) clarified in 2022, following a Ministry of Consumer Affairs directive, that service charges are optional and customers can request removal. This is separate from GST (5% for restaurants without liquor licence, 18% for those with AC and liquor). Knowing the difference helps you decide whether an additional tip is warranted or whether the service charge already covers gratuity.

Splitting Large Group Bills

This calculator lets you divide the total equally among any number of diners. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage (0-30%), and set the number of people. Each person's share - including tip - is shown instantly. Useful for corporate team lunches, college group outings, and family dinners where quick mental arithmetic is impractical.

Tip Calculator Questions

There is no fixed standard. 10% is common for restaurants, 5–10% for delivery riders, and many upscale restaurants already include a 10% service charge in the bill. Check your bill before adding more.

Convention varies. This calculator uses whichever amount you enter, so input the pre-tax subtotal or the full post-tax total based on your preference - both are common practices.

When enabled, the per-person total is rounded up to the nearest whole rupee. For example, ₹83.33 per person becomes ₹84. This avoids loose change and slightly benefits the person being tipped.

Yes. Select the Custom option and type 0. The calculator will show the full bill split with no tip added - useful for checking how to divide a bill when a service charge is already included.

No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server, nothing is stored, and nothing is tracked. Your bill amount never leaves the page.
