Power Conversion Questions

1 mechanical hp = 745.69987 W. 1 electrical hp = 746 W (used for electric motors). In India, motor ratings often use kW but spec sheets sometimes list hp.

1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 BTU/hr = 3.517 kW. A 1.5-ton AC = 18,000 BTU/hr = 5.28 kW. This "ton" refers to the heat absorbed by melting 1 short ton of ice in 24 hours.

Multiply kW by 1.341 to get mechanical hp. Example: a 5 kW motor = 5 × 1.341 = 6.7 hp. Equivalently, 1 hp = 0.7457 kW.

1 gigawatt (GW) = 1,000 MW = 1,000,000 kW = 1 billion watts. India's total installed electricity generation capacity is over 900 GW. Large power plants are typically 500–1,000 MW.

Power is the rate of energy transfer (W = J/s). Energy is power × time (kWh = kW × hours). Your electricity bill is in kWh (energy), but your AC is rated in kW (power). Running a 2 kW AC for 3 hours uses 6 kWh.
