When to Convert Frequency

Wi-Fi & Networking

Understand 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands in MHz and Hz for network configuration.

Radio & Telecoms

Convert AM/FM radio frequencies (kHz/MHz) to Hz for signal processing calculations.

Processor Speed

Compare CPU clock speeds listed in GHz with memory bus speeds in MHz.

Motors & Engines

Convert motor speed between RPM and Hz for AC motor synchronous speed calculations.

Audio & Music

Convert audio frequencies - the standard concert pitch A4 = 440 Hz, human hearing 20 Hz–20 kHz.

Mains Power

Compare 50 Hz (India/Europe) and 60 Hz (US) mains frequency for electrical appliances.

Frequency Conversion Questions

1 GHz = 1,000,000,000 Hz (one billion hertz). Modern CPU cores run at 3–5 GHz, meaning 3–5 billion cycles per second.

Divide RPM by 60. Example: 1,500 RPM ÷ 60 = 25 Hz. This is the rotation frequency of the shaft in cycles per second. India's power grid runs at 50 Hz = 3,000 RPM for synchronous motors.

2.4 GHz = 2,400 MHz: longer range, more wall penetration, slower speed, more interference. 5 GHz = 5,000 MHz: shorter range, higher speed, less interference. 5 GHz is also called 5,000 MHz or 5,000,000,000 Hz.

1 THz = 10¹² Hz. Terahertz radiation lies between microwaves and infrared light. It is used in medical imaging, security scanners and high-speed wireless research. Visible light is in the 400–790 THz range.

India follows the European standard of 50 Hz. The US uses 60 Hz. When running 60 Hz appliances (e.g. from the US) on a 50 Hz supply, motor-based devices (fans, clocks, mixers) may run about 17% slower, as their speed depends on frequency.
