Understanding Your Fertile Window

Peak Fertility

The 2–3 days before and on ovulation day have the highest chance of conception. Intercourse during these days is most effective.

Sperm Survival

Sperm can live up to 5 days in the fallopian tubes. This extends the fertile window earlier than ovulation day itself.

Confirm Ovulation

Track basal body temperature (BBT) - a small rise of 0.2–0.5°C indicates ovulation. OPK strips detect the LH surge 24–36 hrs before ovulation.

Irregular Cycles

If your cycle varies by more than 7–8 days, tracking with OPKs and BBT is more reliable than calendar methods alone.

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary, typically occurring around 14 days before the next menstrual period in a standard 28-day cycle. However, cycle lengths vary significantly among women - ranging from 21 to 35 days - making the actual ovulation day different for each person. The fertile window spans approximately 5-6 days each cycle: the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, which is why timing intercourse in this window maximises the chances of conception.

How This Calculator Works

Enter the first day of your last menstrual period and your average cycle length. The calculator applies the standard ovulation model to predict your fertile window and most likely ovulation day for the next three months. While this method works well for women with regular cycles, it is an estimate - not a medical diagnosis. Women with irregular cycles, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which affects approximately 1 in 5 Indian women of reproductive age according to AIIMS studies), or hormonal imbalances may benefit from additional tracking methods such as basal body temperature charting or LH test strips.

Fertility Awareness in India

Fertility awareness is gaining importance among Indian couples, particularly as average marriage age rises and family planning education improves. This free, private tool requires no registration and helps couples plan conception naturally with a three-month fertility calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ovulation typically occurs approximately 14 days before your next period - not 14 days after your last period, unless your cycle is exactly 28 days. For a 28-day cycle: ovulation day 14. For a 32-day cycle: day 18. For a 24-day cycle: day 10. Formula: Ovulation Day = Cycle Length − 14.

The fertile window is 6 days total - the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, while an egg survives only 12–24 hours after ovulation. The most fertile days are the 2 days before ovulation and ovulation day. For a 28-day cycle, prime fertile days are days 12–14.

Key ovulation signs: (1) Cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy and slippery like raw egg whites - the peak fertile sign; (2) Basal body temperature (BBT) rises 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation; (3) Mittelschmerz - mild one-sided pelvic pain (~20% of women); (4) LH surge detected by OPK strips 12–36 hours before ovulation; (5) increased libido; (6) light spotting in some women.

Ovulation can be delayed or disrupted by: stress (cortisol suppresses GnRH and LH surge); illness or fever; significant weight changes; thyroid disorders; PCOS (most common cause of irregular ovulation in India, affecting 10–22% of women); travel across time zones; breastfeeding (prolactin suppresses ovulation). Track 3–6 cycles to establish your personal pattern.
