BrowsePanchang is the traditional Hindu almanac that tracks five key elements of each day - Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (birth star), Yoga (auspicious combination), and Karana (half-day segment). The word Panchang itself comes from Sanskrit: pancha meaning five and anga meaning limb. Used for over 2,000 years, Panchang forms the backbone of auspicious timing decisions across Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities throughout India and the Indian diaspora worldwide.
Rahu Kalam is a daily 90-minute period considered inauspicious for starting new ventures, calculated differently for each day of the week. Yamagandam and Gulika are similar inauspicious periods. Choghadiya divides the day and night into eight segments each, labelling them as auspicious or inauspicious for activities like travel, business, and ceremonies. These calculations depend on sunrise and sunset times, which vary by latitude and longitude - making location-specific results essential for accurate Panchang data.
Over 80% of India's 1.4 billion population identifies as Hindu, and Panchang-based timing is consulted for weddings, house-warming ceremonies (griha pravesh), business inaugurations, and religious festivals. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra each follow regional variants of the Panchang. The Government of India publishes an official National Panchang through the Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata, which serves as the reference for national holidays and civil calendars.
