Plot Shape Guide

Square & Rectangle

Square plots are the gold standard in Vastu - all four directions balanced, bringing prosperity and health. East-West longer rectangles are equally excellent. North-South longer rectangles are good.

Irregular Shapes

L-shape plots have a missing corner - which Vastu zone is cut determines the problem. T-shape, triangular and irregular plots cause instability. Always check which direction is affected.

Slope & Level

The plot should slope downward from South-West to North-East. SW should be the highest point, NE the lowest. This allows natural energy and water flow toward the auspicious NE corner.

Plot Surroundings

Roads on the North and East sides of the plot are highly auspicious - they allow more openness in the positive energy zones. Roads on South and West are less favorable but manageable with proper construction.

Vastu for Plot and Land Selection

In Vastu Shastra, the plot (Bhoomi) is considered the most foundational element of any construction - all subsequent Vastu considerations for the building are built upon its selection. Ancient Vastu texts including Manasara (approximately 5th-7th century CE) and Mayamata describe detailed criteria for plot assessment: shape, direction, slope, soil quality, surrounding features, and the plot's relationship to cardinal directions. A plot that violates fundamental Vastu principles is considered difficult to correct even with interior remedies, making selection arguably the most critical Vastu decision.

Plot Shape and Direction Guidelines

Vastu strongly favours square or rectangular plots with a length-to-width ratio not exceeding 1:2. Plots shaped like a triangle, L, T, or irregular polygon are considered problematic due to incomplete elemental coverage of directions. North-facing and East-facing plots are most sought-after in North India, as they maximise morning sunlight entry and are associated with Kubera (wealth) and Indra (prosperity) respectively. A northeast-heavy extension (Ishanya corner) is considered highly auspicious, while southwest extensions are strongly avoided as they are associated with instability. Real estate platforms like MagicBricks and 99acres routinely include Vastu direction filters in their search tools, reflecting strong buyer demand.

Select your plot's facing direction and shape to get a Vastu assessment covering key parameters. The guide covers recommended entry placements, which corners to leave open, underground water tank positioning, and the ideal location for boundary walls and trees relative to each direction.

Plot Vastu Questions

A square plot is the best shape in Vastu - it represents perfect balance of all five elements across all four directions. East-West longer rectangular plots are equally excellent. Gaumukhi (wider at the back) plots are also highly auspicious for homes. Avoid L-shaped, T-shaped, triangular and irregular plots as they have missing directional zones causing energy imbalances.

Northeast-facing plots are the most auspicious - they receive divine Ishanya energy. North-facing plots attract wealth and career energy (Kuber zone). East-facing plots bring health and vitality. These three directions are excellent. South-facing plots are acceptable with proper remedies. Southwest-facing plots are least recommended and require strong Vastu corrections.

Yes - an L-shaped plot always has a missing corner. Missing Northeast causes health and financial issues (the worst case). Missing Southwest creates instability and relationship problems. Missing Southeast affects women's health. Remedies include planting trees in the missing zone direction and placing Vastu pyramids at the boundary corners of the missing area.

Gaumukhi (cow-face) plots are narrow at the front and wider at the back - excellent for homes as wealth accumulates inward over time. Simhamukhi (lion-face) plots are wider at the front and narrower at the back - better for commercial use as the wide frontage attracts customers. Simhamukhi is not recommended for residences as energy flows outward.

The ideal plot slope is downward from Southwest to Northeast. The SW corner should be the highest point and the NE corner the lowest - this allows energy and water to flow toward the auspicious Northeast zone. A plot sloping toward the South or West is unfavorable as it drains wealth and positive energy out of the auspicious zones.
