Shiv Aarti Devotion to Lord Shiva

The Shiv Aarti - popularly known as "Om Jai Shiv Omkara" - is a devotional hymn sung in praise of Lord Shiva, the Supreme Being in Shaivism and one of the principal deities of the Hindu Trinity. Composed in Hindi by Pandit Shradha Ram Phillori (1837-1881), the aarti is structured around the various divine attributes, weapons, family, and cosmic roles of Mahadev. It is sung to a distinctive rhythmic melody at the conclusion of Shiva puja, with worshippers circling a lit camphor flame (aarti lamp) before the Shivalinga or the deity's image.

Shiva Worship Across India

Lord Shiva is worshipped at 12 Jyotirlinga shrines spread across India - including Somnath (Gujarat), Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Mahakaleswar (Ujjain), and Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) - which together receive tens of millions of pilgrims annually. Maha Shivaratri, observed on the 14th night of the dark fortnight of Phalguna (February-March), is the most significant Shiva festival. Devotees observe fasts, chant "Om Namah Shivaya," and attend midnight abhishek ceremonies. The Shravan month (July-August) also sees lakhs of Kanwariyas carrying sacred Ganga water on foot to offer at Shiva temples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Om Jai Shiv Omkara is the most widely sung devotional aarti dedicated to Lord Shiva (Mahadev, Bholenath, Shankar). It praises Shiva's divine forms (two-armed, four-armed, ten-armed), his ornaments (crescent moon, skull garland, vibhuti/ash), his vehicle Nandi (the bull), his trident and other weapons, and the unity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in the sacred syllable Om. It is sung at the conclusion of all Shiva puja.

Shiv Aarti is performed on Mondays (Shiva's special day), on Maha Shivratri (the great night of Shiva - most important), on Pradosha days (13th lunar day, especially Monday Pradosha), throughout the Shravana month, and at the conclusion of every Shiva puja and Shiva Sahasranama parayana. In Shiva temples, it is performed multiple times daily at dawn, noon and dusk.

'Onkara' refers to the sacred syllable Om (ॐ), the primordial sound from which all creation emerged. Shiva is called 'Onkara' because he embodies Om - the source and substance of all existence. The last stanza of this aarti reveals that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are united in the syllable Om - representing the one supreme consciousness in its three roles of creation (Brahma), sustenance (Vishnu) and dissolution/transformation (Shiva). This is the essence of the Vedantic teaching on the Trimurti.

Daily recitation of Om Jai Shiv Omkara is believed to invoke Lord Shiva's blessings for protection, removal of fears, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death (moksha). Shiva devotees regard it as a powerful practice that purifies the mind, calms the ego, and deepens meditation. The vibrations of the Sanskrit verses are said to harmonise the body and mind, while the act of aarti itself cultivates gratitude and devotion as a daily spiritual discipline.
