Sade Sati - literally "seven and a half" in Hindi - refers to a 7.5-year period during which Saturn (Shani) transits through three consecutive zodiac signs: the sign before your Moon sign (janma rashi), the Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Each transit lasts approximately 2.5 years. According to Vedic astrology, this period is associated with karmic lessons, challenges, and significant life changes. Dhaiya (also called Kantaka Shani) is a shorter 2.5-year sub-period when Saturn sits in the 4th or 8th house from the natal Moon.
Sade Sati is among the most discussed astrological phenomena in India. Major newspapers, including Dainik Jagran and The Hindu, regularly publish Saturn transit guides. During Shani Jayanti and Saturdays, temples dedicated to Shanidev - such as Shani Shingnapur in Maharashtra - attract hundreds of thousands of devotees seeking relief. This calculator uses Saturn's computed longitude against the 12 rashis to determine whether you are currently in a Sade Sati or Dhaiya phase and identifies which of the three sub-periods (rising, peak, or setting) you are experiencing.
