A Kundli (also called Janam Patrika or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the precise moment of a person's birth, charted from the perspective of their birth location. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the chart is divided into 12 houses, each governing a different life domain - from self and family to career and spirituality. The positions of the 9 Grahas (planets) - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu - across these houses form the foundation of all Jyotish analysis. Kundli generation has been practised by professional astrologers in India for over 2,500 years.
This tool uses the North Indian diamond-style chart format, which is the standard across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and much of Central India. In this format, the chart is a fixed diamond grid with Lagna always at the top-centre; houses are fixed in position while the rashi (zodiac sign) values rotate based on the ascendant. This differs from the South Indian square format (common in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala) where signs are fixed and houses rotate. The Lahiri ayanamsa - the Government of India's recommended standard since 1955 - is used for all calculations.
Kundli matching (Guna Milan) is a central part of Hindu marriage selection, where family astrologers compare two birth charts for compatibility across 36 points covering temperament, health, financial stability, and progeny. Kundlis are also consulted for naming ceremonies (Naamkaran), selecting auspicious business launch dates (Muhurta), and identifying malefic planetary periods (Mahadasha) requiring gemstone or ritual remedies. Over 90% of traditional Hindu marriages in India involve some form of Kundli consultation.
