The 8 Vastu Zones

North (Kuber)

Ruled by Kuber (god of wealth). Best for main door, study, living room, water features. Associated with career and financial prosperity.

Northeast (Ishanya)

Most sacred corner. Ruled by Lord Shiva. Ideal for prayer room, meditation space, water storage. Never place toilet or kitchen here.

East (Indra)

Sunrise direction. Ruled by Lord Indra. Excellent for main entrance, living room. Morning sunlight brings positive energy and health.

Southeast (Agni)

Fire element zone. Ruled by Agni. Perfect for kitchen. Avoid main entrance and bedrooms here to prevent conflicts and health issues.

Vastu Compass Direction Guide

Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of spatial arrangement and architecture, assigns specific energies and attributes to each of the eight cardinal and intercardinal directions. The compass (disha) is the foundational tool of Vastu practice - every room, entrance, workspace, and sleeping arrangement is evaluated relative to the plot's true compass bearing. Vastu Shastra has roots in the Vedic period (approximately 1500-500 BCE) and is codified in texts including Manasara, Mayamata, and Vishwakarma Prakash. Unlike Feng Shui (Chinese geomancy), Vastu is specific to Indian climate, culture, and solar movement in the subcontinent's latitude range.

The Eight Directions in Vastu

Each direction in Vastu is governed by a deity and carries specific attributes: North (Kubera - wealth), Northeast (Ishanya - spiritual energy), East (Indra - prosperity), Southeast (Agni - fire and energy), South (Yama - discipline), Southwest (Nirrti - stability), West (Varuna - water and creativity), and Northwest (Vayu - movement and air). The main entrance in the North or East is considered highly auspicious. Master bedrooms in the Southwest promote stability, while kitchens in the Southeast (fire zone) are considered ideal. Vastu principles are cited by over 80% of Indian homebuyers as a factor in purchasing decisions, according to a 2023 survey by NoBroker.

Advanced Vastu divides the 8 cardinal directions into 16 zones of 22.5 degrees each: N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW. Each sub-direction inherits characteristics of its two neighbouring cardinal zones. For example, NNE blends North's wealth energy with Northeast's spirituality. Northeast (Ishanya) is the most sacred direction in Vastu - it is the zone of Lord Shiva and the meeting point of North's prosperity and East's health energy. The Northeast corner should always be kept open, clean and light. It is ideal for a prayer room or meditation space. Placing a toilet, kitchen or heavy structure in the Northeast is the most severe Vastu dosha.

A regular compass shows only magnetic north and cardinal directions. Southwest (Nairutya) is the earth element zone - the heaviest and most stable directional zone. Placing the master bedroom here gives the head of the household maximum stability, authority and longevity. The Southwest should be kept elevated and heavy, with no windows or open spaces on the southwest wall, to ground the home's energy.
