Malayalam Calendar Kolla Varsham

The Malayalam calendar, known as Kolla Varsham, is a solar calendar used in Kerala that began in 825 CE when traders of the Kolla (Quilon) port region standardised a common era for commerce. It runs from Chingam (roughly August-September) to Karkidakam (July-August) across 12 months, each aligned with the Sun's transit through a zodiac sign. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, Malayalam months begin when the Sun enters a new rashi - meaning the date of each month's start varies year to year by one or two days. The calendar governs religious, agricultural and civic life across Kerala's 3.5 crore population.

Key Festivals Determined by the Calendar

Vishu, Kerala's New Year, falls on the first day of Medam (April 14 or 15 in the Gregorian calendar) and is one of the most important dates in the Kolla Varsham. Onam, the harvest festival celebrated over 10 days ending on Thiruvonam nakshatra in Chingam, is Kerala's largest festival and a state public holiday. Thrissur Pooram, widely considered the world's most spectacular temple festival, is fixed in Medam according to the Malayalam calendar. The calendar also guides auspicious dates (muhurtham) for weddings, house-warming ceremonies and business openings.

How This Tool Helps

This tool displays the current Malayalam month, the corresponding Kollavarsham year and upcoming Kerala festival dates, making it useful for the large Malayali diaspora worldwide as well as anyone in Kerala planning rituals or travel. School and university academic calendars in Kerala also align with government holidays set by the Kolla Varsham, so teachers and students find the calendar equally relevant.

Malayalam Calendar Questions

Vishu 2026 is on April 14, 2026 - when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries). The main tradition is seeing Vishukkani at first light. Vishu Kaineettam (cash gifts), Vishu Kodi (new clothes), and a grand Sadhya feast are the key customs.

The 12 Malayalam months: 1. Chingam · 2. Kanni · 3. Thulam · 4. Vrischikam · 5. Dhanu · 6. Makaram · 7. Kumbham · 8. Meenam · 9. Medam · 10. Edavam · 11. Midhunam · 12. Karkidakam. Unlike the North Indian lunar calendar, the Malayalam calendar is solar - each month begins when the Sun enters a new zodiac sign.

Onam 2025 is a 10-day festival from approximately 25 August 2025 (Atham) to 3 September 2025 (Thiruvonam). Thiruvonam is the main day when King Mahabali visits Kerala. Pookalam (flower carpet), Onam Sadhya (26-dish feast on banana leaf), Vallam Kali (snake boat race), and Onam games are the key traditions.

Karkidakam (July–August) is the difficult monsoon month in Kerala, traditionally associated with illness and scarcity. To counter this, the entire Ramayana is read at home and temples throughout the month (Karkidaka Ramayana). Medicinal Karkidaka Kanji (herbal rice gruel) is consumed for health. Karkkidaka Vavu (Amavasya) is observed for pitru tarpanam at rivers and the sea.

Makaravilakku is a miraculous star (Makara Jyoti) that appears in the sky at Sabarimala on Makar Sankranti evening (January 14), witnessed by millions of pilgrims. The 41-day Mandala Kalam pilgrimage season culminates with this event. Lord Ayyappa's deity is decked with Makara Thiruvaabharanam (jewelled ornaments) brought in a special procession from Pandalam Palace.
