Ganesh Chaturthi (also called Vinayaka Chaturthi) falls on the Chaturthi (fourth) tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada - typically between August and September in the Gregorian calendar. The 10-day Ganeshotsav festival begins on this day and concludes on Anant Chaturdashi, when idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed in water bodies in a ceremony called Ganesh Visarjan. This page lists exact dates for 2024 through 2027 and beyond, computed from the precise tithi sunrise time.
While Ganesh Chaturthi has been celebrated for centuries, its modern public form was popularised by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Pune in 1893. Tilak transformed it from a private household ritual into a community festival to foster unity among Indians during British colonial rule - a move that proved highly effective as a social and political tool. Today, Mumbai's Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations - centred around the 185-year-old Lalbaugcha Raja idol - attract over 1.5 million devotees on the final day alone. The festival is observed across Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and by Indian diaspora communities worldwide.
Idols may be immersed on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, or 10th day. The 10th day (Anant Chaturdashi) is the most auspicious for the final Visarjan. Many cities have now moved to artificial ponds to reduce river pollution, following guidelines from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
