Rubric Generator FAQ

A rubric is a scoring guide that lists specific criteria for an assignment and describes the levels of quality for each criterion. It removes subjectivity from grading by clearly defining what Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, and Needs Improvement mean for each aspect being assessed. Sharing rubrics with students before an assignment helps them understand expectations and self-assess their work.

Most effective rubrics use 4–6 criteria and 3–5 performance levels. More than 6 criteria make it hard to focus, and more than 5 levels create ambiguity in distinguishing between adjacent levels. A 4-level rubric (Excellent/Good/Satisfactory/Needs Work) maps naturally to the A/B/C/F grade scale. Ensure criteria weights add up to the total marks for the assignment.

Print one rubric per student. For each criterion (row), circle or highlight the cell that matches the student's performance level. Note the points for that cell. Sum all criterion points to get the total score. The bottom row shows max marks per criterion and the total possible score. You can annotate cells with specific comments before returning the rubric to students as feedback.
