Muhurat Calculator Auspicious Times

A muhurat (also spelled muhurta) is an auspicious time window selected by a Jyotishi (Vedic astrologer) based on the simultaneous alignment of favourable tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (birth star), yoga (planetary combination) and karana (half-tithi). The concept originates from the Vedic text Muhurta Chintamani (17th century CE) and earlier Grihyasutra literature, which prescribed specific planetary conditions for 16 life events - from birth to marriage to death ceremonies. A 24-hour day is divided into 30 muhurtas of 48 minutes each, and selecting an activity at the right muhurta is believed to maximise its chances of success.

Most Important Muhurtas in Indian Life

Vivah Muhurat (marriage) is the most commonly sought auspicious time in India, with families consulting pandits months in advance. Wedding halls and mandap bookings in cities like Jaipur, Varanasi and Chennai are frequently block-booked on popular muhurat dates, which occur only on specific tithi-nakshatra combinations during Uttarayan (January-June solar half). Griha Pravesh (housewarming) muhurats are sought for new home entries, while Vyapar Arambha muhurats are used for business launches, shop openings and GST registration ceremonies. Vehicle purchases on auspicious days visibly spike on Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras.

How This Calculator Works

This tool evaluates each date against the panchang elements - tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and the day of the week - and ranks candidate dates by overall auspiciousness. Inauspicious periods such as Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Gulika Kalam are automatically excluded from within the muhurat windows. Enter your event type, city and date range to get a ranked list of optimal muhurats with start and end times in IST.

Frequently Asked Questions

Muhurat (Muhurta) is an auspicious time window selected from the Panchang for beginning important activities. A good muhurat has a favorable combination of Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (moon's position among 27 stars), Yoga (sun-moon combination), and Var (weekday). Starting an activity in a good muhurat is believed to bring success, prosperity, and positive energy to the endeavor.

Auspicious Tithis for muhurat are: Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Dwadashi (12th), and Trayodashi (13th). Purnima (full moon) is also good for some activities. Chaturthi (4th), Ashtami (8th), Navami (9th), Chaturdashi (14th), and Amavasya (new moon) are generally avoided for new beginnings.

Auspicious Nakshatras include: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati, Shravana, Dhanishtha, and Shatabhisha. Nakshatras to avoid include Ardra, Aslesha, Jyeshtha, Moola, and the Gandanta points. For marriage especially, Nakshatra selection is very important.

This calculator uses accurate Vedic astronomical algorithms (Meeus algorithms) to compute Tithi, Nakshatra, and Yoga for each date. The planetary calculations are accurate to within 30 minutes for Tithi. However, for very important events like marriage, the muhurat is assessed for a specific time window (not just the full day), and the individual's birth chart (Kundli) is also considered. This tool provides a good starting point, but consulting a Vedic astrologer for major life events is recommended.
