CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Aveage) replaced the traditional percentage system in many Indian universities and schools following recommendations from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2009. CBSE introduced the 10-point CGPA grading system for Class 10 board examinations in 2010, aiming to reduce exam stress by eliminating rank-based competition. Anna University, VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) and many other state technical universities adopted similar 10-point GPA systems for B.E. and B.Tech programs, though their conversion formulas differ from CBSE's standard multiplier of 9.5.
Despite CGPA being the official grading system on mark sheets, most Indian employers, government job applications, and postgraduate entrance forms still ask for a percentage equivalent. Bank PO and SSC recruitment notifications specify minimum percentage eligibility. CAT and other MBA entrance portals require percentage-based academic history. Campus placement criteria at IITs, NITs and private engineering colleges typically set a 60% or 6.5 CGPA cutoff, making the conversion critical for eligibility screening. Even abroad, foreign universities asking for GPA on a 4.0 scale require applicants to first convert CGPA to percentage and then to a 4.0 equivalent.
CBSE uses Percentage = CGPA x 9.5. Anna University uses Percentage = CGPA x 10. VTU, Mumbai University and other affiliating universities have their own multipliers ranging from 9.0 to 10. This tool covers the most widely used formulas so students can get the right figure for their specific institution without guessing.
