Janmashtami Krishna Jayanti

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, who according to the Bhagavata Purana was born on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada. Scholars place Krishna's historical existence around 3200-3100 BCE, while devotional traditions peg the event more precisely - the Drikpanchang astronomical calculation yields midnight as the nishita muhurta when Krishna is said to have taken birth in a prison cell in Mathura to parents Devaki and Vasudeva. The festival is observed by an estimated 800 million Hindus worldwide.

Celebration Across India

Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh hold the most elaborate celebrations, with lakhs of pilgrims visiting each year. In Mumbai, the Dahi Handi tradition - where teams of young men (govindas) form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street - draws massive crowds and cash prizes sometimes exceeding Rs 1 crore. ISKCON temples across India and the world observe Janmashtami with 24-hour kirtans, abhishek of Krishna idols and midnight arati. Most states declare Janmashtami a public holiday, and it is listed as a gazetted holiday for central government employees.

Date Calculation Complexity

Because Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami tithi during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada, its Gregorian date shifts each year - typically between late July and early September. When Ashtami spans midnight, tradition requires the festival to be observed on the day when the tithi prevails at midnight, which sometimes causes a one-day difference in celebrations between Vaishnavas and Shaivas. This tool calculates the exact date, nishita puja time and Dahi Handi date for any year.

Janmashtami Questions

Janmashtami 2026 is on Friday, 04 September 2026. The midnight Nishita Puja is on the night of 04–05 September. Dahi Handi is on 05 September 2026.

The main Janmashtami puja is at midnight (Nishita Kaal) - approximately 12:00 AM to 12:48 AM - when Lord Krishna is believed to have taken birth. Devotees fast all day and break their fast only after the midnight puja and birth ceremony (Jhankis).

Dahi Handi is celebrated the day after Janmashtami, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat. A pot (handi) filled with curd (dahi) is hung high, and teams of young men (Govindas) form human pyramids to break it - re-enacting young Krishna's mischief of stealing butter and curd. Large prizes are awarded to the winning teams.

Lord Krishna was born at midnight (Nishita Kaal) on Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month under the Rohini nakshatra. The puja is performed at midnight to mark the exact moment of Krishna's birth. Devotees fast throughout the day and the puja begins only after midnight.

Janmashtami is a gazetted public holiday in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Delhi, and several other states. Mathura and Vrindavan (Krishna's birthplace) see the largest celebrations with lakhs of pilgrims. ISKCON temples worldwide also hold grand celebrations.
