What's Included in On-Road Price?

Road Tax (Lifetime)

The largest variable cost - paid once at registration. Ranges from 5% (Himachal) to 20%+ (Kerala, Karnataka) of ex-showroom price depending on state and vehicle type.

RC & Smart Card

Registration Certificate (RC) fee: ₹300 for bikes, ₹600 for cars. Smart card fee (₹200–400) covers the laminated RC card. Some states include hypothecation charges if financed.

Third-Party Insurance

Mandatory by law. Premium is fixed by IRDAI based on vehicle type and engine capacity. Comprehensive insurance is optional but strongly recommended for new vehicles.

EV Exemptions

Most states offer 0% road tax for EVs. Delhi, Maharashtra, TN, Karnataka, Telangana also waive registration fees under their EV policies - saving ₹50K–₹2L on premium EVs.

If you relocate permanently, re-register in the new state within 12 months. You can apply for a road tax refund from the original state (prorated unused period). Pay road tax in the new state. Do this via the Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in) or your local RTO.

Form 20 (application) + Form 21 (sale certificate) + Form 22 (roadworthiness certificate) + insurance + address proof + ID proof + PAN (if vehicle > ₹10L) + photos. Your dealer usually handles this. Online applications are available at parivahan.gov.in.
