About Vinayaka Chaturthi

Vinayaka Chaturthi falls on the 4th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) every month. It is dedicated to Lord Ganesha - the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings. The Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (August–September) is the grand 10-day festival celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival

The main 10-day festival in 2025 begins on 27 Aug 2025. Anant Chaturdashi (immersion) is 10 days later.

Vinayaka Chaturthi Monthly Ganesha Puja Dates

Vinayaka Chaturthi is the monthly auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, observed on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) of each Hindu lunar month. It is distinct from the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival (Vinayaka Chaturthi in the month of Bhadrapada) which spans 10-11 days and is celebrated with great grandeur across Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The monthly Chaturthi is a quieter personal observance - devotees visit Ganesha temples, offer modaks, and seek his blessing for removing obstacles before beginning new ventures.

Ganesh Chaturthi - The Grand Annual Festival

The Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, popularly known as Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chathurthi, is one of India's largest public celebrations. The festival was popularised as a public event by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 in Pune to unite Indians during the freedom movement. Today, Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja and Pune's Kasba Ganpati are among the most visited pandals in the world. In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on August 27.

Vinayaka Chaturthi Questions

Vinayaka Chaturthi is the 4th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) every month, dedicated to Lord Ganesha - the remover of obstacles. Starting a new business or auspicious task on this day is considered highly beneficial.

Vinayaka Chaturthi is on Shukla Paksha (waxing moon 4th day) - a day of celebration and worship. Sankashti Chaturthi is on Krishna Paksha (waning moon 4th day) - primarily a fasting day broken after moonrise.

The Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (August–September) is the most important and is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi, the grand 10-day festival, ending with idol immersion on Anant Chaturdashi.

Devotees wake early, bathe, perform Ganesha puja with modak offerings, and recite the Ganesha Atharvashirsha or Ganesh Chalisa. On the main festival day, viewing the moon is traditionally avoided.

According to mythology, Lord Ganesha cursed the moon for laughing at him. Seeing the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi is believed to attract false blame or misfortune, so devotees avoid moonlight on that specific night.
